Pearls of Agnon

A Guest for the Night (first published in September 1939 as Germany invaded Poland) was singled out by the Nobel Prize Committee as S.Y. Agnon’s “greatest achievement.” Based on autobiographical events, it tells the bitterly nostalgic tale of the narrator’s visit to his native town, where he discovers that the alte heim, the old home, no longer exists: It has become a place where we can only be guests passing for the night.

Glimpse into the life and work of Nobel Prize winner in literature, Shmuel Yosef Agnon.
